How to Choose the Right Blank T-Shirt for Screen Printing
If you’ve ever placed a custom t-shirt order and wondered why the final product looked or felt different from what you expected, the blank shirt itself is usually the reason. At High 5 Printing & Productions in Mobile, AL, one of the most common questions we get from businesses, schools, and organizations is: “What shirt should I order?” The answer matters more than most people think — and it affects how your print looks, how long it lasts, and how your team or customers feel wearing it.
Why the Blank Shirt Matters as Much as the Print
Screen printing works best on smooth, stable fabrics. The ink needs to sit cleanly on the surface — and when the shirt fabric is uneven, too stretchy, or too thin, it shows in the final print. Beyond just print quality, the shirt is what your customer, student, or team member is actually wearing. A great print on a cheap shirt still feels cheap.
Fabric Weight: The Single Most Important Factor
T-shirt fabric weight is measured in ounces per square yard (oz) or grams per square meter (GSM). For screen printing, we generally recommend shirts in the 5.5 to 6.5 oz range. Here’s why it matters:
Lightweight (4 oz or less): Too thin for good ink opacity. Ink can bleed or look faded.
Mid-weight (5.3 to 5.5 oz): Works for most standard orders. Gildan 5000 and similar blanks fall here.
Heavyweight (6 oz+): Best for vibrant, full-coverage prints. Holds its shape wash after wash.
Cotton vs. Blends: What Prints Best?
100% cotton is the gold standard for screen printing, especially with plastisol inks. Cotton fibers absorb ink well, produce crisp edges, and hold color over time. For most business apparel, school spirit wear, and event shirts in Mobile and the Gulf Coast area, a quality 100% cotton blank is our top recommendation.
Cotton-poly blends (like 50/50 or tri-blends) give a softer, more athletic feel and are popular for staff uniforms and retail apparel. They work well with water-based inks and direct-to-film (DTF) printing. The tradeoff is a slight texture called “dye migration” that can affect ink colors on darker blended fabrics, so your printer needs to account for that.
Fit and Style: Match the Shirt to the Audience
Think about who is actually wearing the shirt. A boxy, unisex fit works well for most general-purpose orders — construction crews, school groups, church events. But if you’re outfitting a restaurant staff, a retail team, or ordering for a fundraiser with a mixed audience, offering both a standard unisex cut and a fitted style leads to happier wearers and shirts that get worn longer.
Also consider the neckline and sleeve style. Crew neck is the most versatile and print-friendly. V-necks are popular for hospitality and service teams. Raglan sleeves add a sporty look for athletic programs or school spirit wear.
Color Choices and How They Affect Your Print
Shirt color directly impacts how your design looks and how many ink colors are needed. Printing on white or light-colored shirts gives you the most color flexibility and the lowest cost — because no base coat or underbase layer is required.
Dark shirts (black, navy, dark green, maroon) require an underbase — usually a white ink layer printed first so colors appear accurately on top. This adds a step to production but gives you a bright, professional result. If you’re ordering dark shirts, just plan for it in your budget and timeline.
